English at SDI AHASS

The study of English at SDI AHASS Primary School is a bespoke programme of study which aims to support children in becoming confident speakers, balanced readers and to have the skills to write for specific purposes.  At SDI AHASS Primary School, we explicitly teach speaking and listening, reading and writing. Our principal aim is to develop children’s knowledge, skills, and understanding in English and ensure that the children then transfer these skills into all subjects.

Our aim is to develop children’s communication, language and essential English skills. We ensure that they have the ability to listen, speak, read and write for a wide range of purposes. Subsequently ensuring that they have the tools of language to learn and communicate ideas, views and feelings confidently. We believe that the ability to communicate gives children the capacity to participate more fully in their society and become skilful communicators. Working together with others leads to the wider development of social relations, which include friendship, empathy and sharing emotions. We encourage the children to express themselves creatively and imaginatively, as they become enthusiastic and critical readers of stories, poetry, speech, as well as non-fiction and media texts. Children gain an understanding of how language works by looking at its patterns, structures and origins. Children use their knowledge, skills and understanding in speaking and writing across a range of different situations.

Speaking and Listening

Spoken Language underpins the development of reading and writing, therefore, our English Curriculum is designed to continually develop children’s confidence and competence in speaking and listening skills. We focus on developing the capacity to explain their understanding of books and other reading, to prepare their ideas before they write, and as well as teaching them to understand and use the conventions for discussion and debate.

Reading

At SDI AHASS Primary School we are extremely proud of the way we teach Reading and are committed to developing ‘Balanced Readers’. The skills of Reading are taught explicitly.  The school strives to promote a love of reading throughout the whole school, from Grade 1 to Grade 6.

Writing

In Writing, it is important that children are exposed to a wide range of different text types. Our aim at is to enable children to write with confidence, fluency, accuracy and meaning in narrative and non- fiction across a wide range of text types. We support children to increase their ability to use planning, drafting and editing to improve their work and the work of their peers. A balance of modelled, guided and independent strategies are used to support and extend learning. This approach is highly supportive to all children, especially ELL and SEND. Writing is assessed regularly and teachers effectively use assessment information to inform planning to ensure that children are always meeting their full potential.

ELL

The ELL programme at SDI AHASS Primary School is designed to give support to children whose first language is not English. The aim of this programme is to develop and strengthen English skills, enabling children to be successful in the mainstream classroom. At first, it may seem that some children are doing ‘just fine’ when it comes to learning English, however the level of English skill necessary to comprehend and apply new information to Maths or Scientific text is far greater than the knowledge required for basic communication.

In order to adequately address the diverse needs of children who are identified as English Language Learners, assessments are carried out and specific intervention is put in to place during the school day. The content of the sessions is a combination of direct English language instruction and content based instruction, designed to boost vocabulary and comprehension skills in various academic areas. Along with establishing a strong conversational level of English, a key part of the programme is working to expand knowledge of content-specific vocabulary. Ultimately, children will be able to effectively listen, speak, read and write fluently in English.

Mathematics at SDI AHASS

A high quality Mathematics education provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation for the beauty and power of mathematics and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

SDI AHASS Primary School teaches a Cambridge curriculum. Using the Mathematics curriculum of England, , the focus is on securing an understanding in the subject by developing a greater depth. The children are provided with opportunities to develop their ability to calculate fluently, to reason and solve problems through application of knowledge and transferable skills. Mathematics is essential to everyday life which is incorporated through cross curricular links, particularly with STEAM. This gives the children an opportunity to see purpose within Mathematics and use real life examples to deepen their understanding and inform them of the necessity for Mathematics in every day life.

Mathematics at SDI AHASS Primary school is taught in mixed ability groups. By doing so the school aims to provide more opportunities for all children to achieve their potential. This is through careful and thorough planning of the whole unit of work as well as modelled teaching and activities provided. At SDI AHASS Primary School children are encouraged to take ownership of their learning by allowing them to move through the work at a pace appropriate to their ability. Children work independently, in pairs and groups which exposes all children to a higher level of vocabulary and reasoning and provides opportunities for children to be supported and support their peers. Lessons are carefully planned and questions differentiated using the Blooms language of learning to develop higher order thinking skills and depth of understanding to ensure that the task matches the needs of the individuals.

Computing at SDI AHASS

The vision at SDI AHASS is to improve learning outcomes through cross curricular application of Computing to prepare students with the computational thinking skills to deliver success for an ever evolving global environment of information and technology.

We aim to provide our students with the access to modern technology to enable them to leave school as confident, responsible and safe e-learners. Technology is embedded into lesson planning to promote Computing as a tool for engaging the students and enriching their learning. We make use of the laptops.

Science at SDI AHASS Primary School

The vision of SDI AHASS Primary School is that every child believes they are a scientist – a creator of thoughts, ideas, explanations and questions to explore.

The school aims to stimulate a child’s curiosity to gain an understanding of natural phenomena; thus developing children’s scientific knowledge and an understanding of the world around them.  Learning opportunities in science allow children to develop reasoning and thinking skills to problem solve, communicate effectively, work cooperatively and use technology to become 21st Century learners. Children learn to ask scientific questions and begin to appreciate the way science will affect their future on a personal, national, and global level.

Science is one of core of learning at SDI AHASS Primary School. It is taught as part of our topic units and in dedicated Science lessons in the Lab and in classrooms.

The aims of science are to enable children to:

  • ask and answer scientific questions
  • making predictions
  • develop skills through scientific enquiry and plan investigations
  • use appropriate scientific equipment to aid enquiry, including technology
  • evaluate evidence
  • present their conclusions clearly and accurately
  • know and understand the life processes of living things
  • know and understand materials and their properties
  • know and understand the physical processes of materials, electricity, light, sound and natural forces
  • know about the nature of the solar system, including the earth
  • understand current world issues such as Global Warming/Environmental changes including Recycling and how to reduce their Carbon Footprint

Computer Science at SDI AHASS Primary School

Every students using their own laptop, so students can be fast learner. the materials of this subjects are paint knowing computer, paint application, word application, presentation with power point, etc. Our method for computer science is ‘fun learning’.
